Bitumen Emulsion

Bitumen emulsion is made up of three basic ingredients which include Bitumen, emulsifying agent and water. It is a well known fact that asphalt and water will not mix, except under carefull controlled conditions using highly specialised equipment and chemical additives. Cationic emulsions which are positively charged ions may be used at ambient temperatures with agreggates, which do not have to be completely dry. Emulsions are less harzadous to use and can be applied in a wider range of conditions and used for many applications including road surfacing.

How Emulsifiers Work

Both cationic and anionic emulsifiers are surfactants (soaps)

  • Gives stability to the emulsion.Does not allow the Oil (asphalt) to separate from the water
  • Gives a charge(Cationic vs. Anionic (Positive vs. Negative))
  • Imparts setting characteristics.(Slow Set, Medium Set, and Rapid Set)

  • Bitumen Emulsion K1-60
  • Bitumen Emulsion K1-70

Advantages of using Bitumen Emulsion

Cutback bitumen is a blend of penetration grade bitumen and petroleum

  • No need for the heating process when operating..
  • No need for chemical solvents
  • No risk of fire during storage, transportation, and implementation
  • No risk of environmental contamination
  • The solvent used in cutback bitumen is sometimes also referred to as the "cutter" or "flux".
  • Extensive application in road construction and maintenance.
